“Keys to the Palace: Many Faces of G-d” with David Klass

“Keys to the Palace: Many Faces of G-d” with David Klass

This summer David Klass is substituting for Rabbi Glick for his 10am Thursday class!

David Klass’ course will consist of 12 weekly classes on Thursdays, 10am, Zoom with select Thursdays in-person.

Each class will have a short reading provided beforehand by David. The readings will be short passages from the following: the Torah; Maimonides, The Guide for the Perplexed; Kafka, “Before The Law” (from The Trial); Levinas, Totality and Infinity; Plato, The Republic Book 7; Buber, I and Thou; Dov Baer, Tract on Ecstasy; Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching; Rilke, Duino Elegy 8; Jeanne de Salzmann, The Awakening of Thought; Wikipedia, Turning a Punctured Torus Inside Out; and specific visual artwork from Dali, Escher, and the Jain religion.

Although seemingly diverse, the selections from each of the above sources will, once thought through carefully, converge to a common theme useful to “Turning the Keys to the Palace Gates.” The Palace analogy is borrowed from Maimonides Guide, Volume 3, chapter 51 (Translated by Shlomo Pines). This will be the general map of the class.

  • July 25: A short section from Martin Buber’s work I and Thou ‘”Duality Fusing” where the experiences that many have in this path are described.
  • August 1: A few parts of Dov Baer, Tract on Ecstasy (selection) “Trapped in Ecstasy.” This treats of those seekers who achieve a state of ecstasy and choose to dwell in it without going farther.
  • August 8:  Escher: The Print Gallery, Kurt Goedel (selection)  “Self Reference in Art and Mathematics.”
  • August 15 Dali “Exploding Head” and “Yogi equivalent” (Art Works) “Two Loch en Kops”
  • August 22: Wikipedia, Turning a Torus Ring inside out (animated diagram) “Inside Outside”
